STAG - Skills Targeted Academic Growth of the Mind for Learning through the Ladder of Learning - is a rapidly learning pedagogy, which is used widely to impart literacy skills to tribal children, who are generally dropouts or adult learners.
The system of education, successfully experimented and evolved by the Calcutta Jesuit Father Mongal Kumar Das, has already produced more than 2000 tribal boys and girl in West Bengal alone, many of whom are in enviable position today, some of them even working in prestigeous government offices.
STAG in a nutshell, is a rapid learning alternative method of education, which prepares dropouts and adult learners to join formal schooling in class 3 or 4, within one year. The residential training is provided for the time being only for Santal tribal children at Mangaldeep Ashram STAG Resource Centre, Jhantipahari, in district Bankura. It is a joyful learning method, where the integral development of the children are taken care of.
Regular training programmes are conducted on the philosophy and implementation of STAG, not only for tribal children, but also for other children of the mainstream.
It is a novel method of teaching learning, which can even challenge a well-learned teacher, for she or he will have plenty to learn from the children in the course of STAG. It is akin to the Integral Pedagogy Paradigm. In fact, Father Mongal claims that even before the IPP was thought of, the STAG was putting into practice the ideals envisioned in the IPP.
