Facilities

Udayani was initially established as a documentation Centre with the purpose of making known to the public the importance of social knowledge. To make the basic objectives of Udayani - intellectual force, creative force and protest force - it houses a collection of over 3500 books, 50 different social journals, magazines and innumerable paper clippings on a wide range of social issues and concerns.

The library boasts of a collection of a large number of books, journals, magazines and innumerable paper clippings on different social issues and concerns. Books on Developments in General, in Asia, in Bengal and in Kolkata; on social concerns like Poverty, Urbanization, Communalism, Globalization, Global Peace, Human Rights, Bonded Labour, Ecology and Environment, Economy, Dalits, Tribals, Women, Children, Research Methodology, Non-formal Education, Co-operatives, Credit Unions, People's Movements, Media and Communication, Sociology, Political Science, Subaltern studies etc., are available in plenty. These books are further categorised and catalogued into subtopics for easy identification and use.

Magazines and journals like Amnesty International, Seminar, Economic and Political Weekly, Indian Journal of Social Work, Social Action, Population and Development, Social Welfare, Communalism Combat, Mainstream, Down to Earth, Family Planning Perspectives, Health Action, Health Dialogue, Humanscape, Kurukshetra, Legal News and Views, Lokayan, Utsha Manush, Chaser Katha, Debacle, Manushi etc., have been traced back to as many as twenty-five years. Besides a massive collection of Seminar papers, talks, unpublished articles and workshop materials are also available at the disposal of the readers.

The Objective of the Library:

  • To provide opportunities for the social scientists, activists and social workers, and social work students to get the scientific knowledge for social research, study and acquire knowledge about the social reality of the country and world.
  • To give a better understanding of the importance of the local socio, economic and political context in any study.
  • To protect and promote the dying Culture and Language of the ordinary people.
  • To provide opportunities to those in formation to experience the socio, economic realities of the local people, particularly the tribals.
  • To involve in the activities and struggles of the poor and marginalized and deepen the faith of the people in democracy and freedom.


In order to make this wealth of knowledge at the readers' disposal the entire collection of literature is computerized for their maximum usage and benefit.

The Library remains open from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm from Monday to Saturday

Rules:

  • A small fee is charged for membership and better preservation of the books and magazines.
  • Members are not allowed to take books out.
