Udayani Social Action Forum

OBJECTIVES

• To foster values such as equality, love, truth and spirit of enquiry through content and mode of education
• To mainstream children/youth/women who are denied of basic education due to their socio/economic situation
• To provide educational opportunities and assistance to santhals, dalits, children/youth of slum and pavement dwellers

HIGHLIGHTS

• 50 education centres for 1500 Santhal tribal children in Kalna I & II blocks in Burdwan District; 10 education centres for 550 Santhal tribal children in Chattna Block in Bankura Disctrict; 8 education centres in 4 slums and 1 pavement for 250 children in Kolkata city and 5 Education centres in Baruipur area for 200 children
• Regular classes at Udayani for 35 children of pavement dwellers and domestic workers
• One-day sports and cultural programme for 70 children and 30 mothers at Convent Road in collaboration with the local club
• Children's day celebration at Convent Road, Kolkata
• Formal education to 50 children of the women inmates of PCH, who will be eventually mainstreamed through Carmel School - Deshapriya
• 25 dropout children (15 from the slums, 10 from Kalna) have been mainstreamed to regular schools with educational assistance from Udayani
• Educational tours,regular camps, picnics and study tours to zoo, Nicco Park, and Indian Museum for slum & pavement children

IMPACT

• Development of local leadership among children and youth
• 7 out of 10 drop-out students who appeared for Madhyamik exam through our coaching centres passed
• PCH education system has been accepted to be the model for other prisons
• Realization of rights and self dignity
• Children are regular to attend classes
• Local leaders have become sensitive and collaborate in the programmes
• Village and slum people have come forward to build the Education Centres for Udayani
